My New Year's Eve Wreck

Karen and I carpooled with our friends Hiram and Becky for the trip north to the New Year's Eve 2000/2001 party being thrown by Peter and Sarah in their beautiful new home in LA.

Around 3:30 New Year's Morning, there was a loud CRASH! in front of the house. I didn't actually wake up for it, but Becky and Hiram (who had been asleep in the front of the house) did, so did Karen . . . just about everyone but me, I guess. Anyway, the y took a quick look outside, then they woke me up and said, "Louis, I think you need to come outside."

My car (acquired just 6 months earlier) got smashed up pretty bad, but fortunately there weren't any serious injuries involved. The woman driving the other car ('95 Firebird) apparently fell asleep at the wheel; there were no skid marks or anything. He r airbag kept her safe and she got away with nothing more than a broken wrist.

The fire rescue team came, then the cops came, then the tow truck came. It went on until about 5:30 a.m.

In the morning, we went out for a better look at things. I have a bunch of photos from the night of the accident, but they didn't really scan well. You can get a pretty good idea of the damage from this picture, though.
It turns out that she was pretty lucky that she hit my car. If she hadn't, she would have run into something a lot less forgiving (either a brick wall or a large tree) or she would have driven into somebody's bedroom, neither of which is very pleasant to think about.
We noticed that there was a small black scuff mark and a long silver streak on the curb where my car had been parked. Apparently, the other car was moving fast enough to move my car about 25-30 feet, and my rear hubcap had scraped the curb the whole way.
In the end, it was what you might call an ideal accident -- no serious injuries and everyone was well insured. Karen, Hiram, Becky, and I just had to find our way back to San Diego . . .
