Then . . .

Karen and I have known each other since 10th grade, if you
can believe it. We even went to prom together (her mom took this picture
in their living room), though we weren't really
high school sweethearts. We were just good friends with a lot of common
interests. |
We kept in touch for a few years after high school, but eventually
geography and logistics caused us to lose track of each other. In 1999,
our 10 year high school reunion brought us back together again, and
allowed us to reestablish our friendship. Since
then, things just sort of took off.

And now . . .

By good fortune, I managed to get a job here in San Diego that started
right after I left Berkeley in 2000. This is a picture of us at the
Bluegrass Festival in Julian last year.
Her parents have a little cabin home on the hill in Julian, and we like
to spend the weekend up there when we can.

My dad passed away just 8 days after Miss Bailey (as I call her) and I
decided to get married. We thought it would be best to have a small
ceremony and reception for now, and at some point have a more inclusive
celebration later on. We've selected floral arrangements that, in
addition to flowers, include assorted varieties of apples, pears, and
grapes as a sort of tribute to my dad and his memory. We've also asked my
cousin Karen to play Schumann's "Traumerei" during the candlelighting, a
piece which my father frequently asked her to play for him.
